October Campaign – Stoptober

At the White Ribbon Association we have always promoted the annual Stoptober campaign, an ideal opportunity for smokers to quit for 28 days throughout October.

The support available to smokers help them give up has never been more easy to access, and research has shown that if someone quits during October then they are five times more likely to quit for good!

This year there is a whole variety of ways to encourage smokers during their journey. The new Facebook messenger bot provides daily motivation to help beat cravings, and the smartphone app helps to track smokefree days and money saved.

The Stoptober website also provides details of local Stop Smoking Services, medicines which can aid the process of quitting and information on e-cigarettes.

If you’re a smoker who is thinking of quitting, here are some effective tips to help you achieve your goal:

  • Find a distraction

Start a new hobby to help take your mind of cigarettes. Research has shown you will be more likely to stay smoke free for a year if you combine your quit attempt with physical exercise

  • Try different methods

Everyone’s quit journey will be different. Try some of the many different ways recommended on the Stoptober website to find the method which works best for you

  • Start afresh

When you decide you’re ready to quit throw away anything used for smoking such as leftover cigarettes and lighters to help resist any temptations

Whatever your reasons for quitting, whether it’s to live a more healthy life, save money or to protect your family’s wellbeing, we wish you the best of luck!
