February Campaign: Money Management
Throughout February we focus on the importance of money management, and the influence gambling can have on our finances.
Gambling has become an incredibly accessible activity, particularly with the growing popularity of online gambling. While many people can partake in gambling safely and socially, knowing their limits and stopping when it is no longer enjoyable, some struggle to recognise when they may be developing a gambling addiction.
The aim of our February campaign is to highlight some of these issues and suggest ways people can control their gambling habit if they feel it is becoming too problematic. When gambling creates issues with money it can be very stressful, but there are several ways people can start to take back control of their finances:
Self-exclusion
If someone has identified they may have a problem with gambling, the first positive step towards recovery is self-exclusion. All gambling establishments (including online) allow people to exclude themselves from all gambling activity (such as being refused entry into betting shops and casinos or being removed from databases).
Set a budget
There are many benefits of setting out a budget, whether monthly, weekly or even daily! Not only does it allow someone to see exactly how much disposable income they have, but they can also plan for unexpected costs.
Make use of online banking
Most banks and building societies now offer online banking for people who have access to the internet. This is a great tool to enable someone to instantly assess how much money they have.
Seek advice
If money and gambling problems start to become too overwhelming, the best advice is to seek help sooner rather than later. Organisations such as Gamblers Anonymous or GamCare can support someone through their gambling addiction, whilst impartial services such as Citizens Advice and The Money Advice Service can provide guidance on how to manage money.
During February, libraries, workplaces, colleges, schools and pharmacies across the West Midlands area are all taking part in this campaign and you can too! We have a number of options to support you to run the Money Management campaign. Our Development Officers can deliver in-depth educational sessions or informal health events, whereas our free Community Health Information displays are ideal for passers-by to take information at their leisure.
