August Campaign – International Youth Day and the Impact of Peer Pressure

Whilst many young people are enjoying the summer holidays, at the White Ribbon Association we are raising awareness of the challenges which impact on their lives; particularly the issue of peer pressure.

Childhood is full is transitional periods; moving to secondary school or college, developing new friendship groups, and establishing identity. Decisions made at this stage can shape their lives, so we feel it is important to raise awareness of different pressures enabling them to make healthy life choices.

If you know a young person, share these simple yet effective ways to resisting pressure and remind them they always have a choice

  • Choose the right friends

A big part of resisting peer pressure is choosing friends who will respect your decision not to do something. Genuine friends won’t make you feel guilty or immature if you say no!

  • Don’t make it a big deal

If you choose not to do something, don’t make a big deal of it. Making a joke out of an uncomfortable situation can resolve it quickly

  • Speak to someone you trust

If you someone is pressuring you to do something, speak to someone you trust such as another friend, a parent or a counsellor and ask for their advice

  • Excuse yourself

If you’re around people who are doing something that makes you feel uncomfortable, make an excuse to leave; say you feel unwell or you need to be home by a certain time.

  • Get involved in a new activity

Starting a new activity or hobby is a great way to develop skills and meet likeminded people

  • Say ‘no’!

Sometimes, just refusing to do something and being confident in what you feel is right and wrong is enough to resist peer pressure

Our educational sessions, health events, awareness assemblies and community health information displays help promote International Youth Day within your school, college or community location.

This August, you can view our displays at Chelmsley Wood, Balsall Common, Castle Bromwich and Kingshurst Libraries. Also, Employment Plus centres in Oldbury and Nechells have taken advantage of this free scheme. Contact us today to find out how we can help you!
