Following on from our previous booking in October, we were invited back to Asda Supermarket in Shirley to promote Alcohol Awareness and Road Safety Week with the local community.

The aim of the stand was to raise awareness of the dangers of driving a vehicle when under the influence of alcohol, and to reinforce the message that there are no ‘safe’ levels of alcohol which can be consumed. This is a particularly important message to deliver so close to Christmas, and the stand was a great success!

We took along various different resources and activities for people to try, including the units challenge activity, models of healthy and alcohol-affected organs and alcohol impairment goggles. The activities prompted many conversations with visitors to the stand. Several people who tried the units challenge stated that they were shocked at how little one unit of alcohol actually is. Others were surprised at the way alcohol can so severely effect vision and balance when they wore the alcohol-impairment goggles.

We were able to interact with quite a large number of shoppers throughout the day. Many people wanted to share their own experiences with alcohol, and quite a number stated that they didn’t drink any alcohol if they were going to drive because it was impossible to know how it will impair concentration and driving skills, which was very encouraging to hear!
