For Fresher’s Week 2015, we were invited by the City of Wolverhampton College Student Union to take part in their health fair. Along with other stands such as the smoothie bike, sexual health information and personal safety delivered by Wolverhampton Police, the primary focus of the event was improving the wellbeing of the students.

During the two day event, we delivered information on e-cigarettes, the Stoptober campaign and New Psychoactive Substances (legal highs).

As part of the Stoptober campaign, we took along our carbon monoxide Smokerlyzer, which tests the amount of carbon monoxide in a person’s breath. This proved to be particularly popular across both days with students and staff alike. Some individuals were regular smokers whilst others had been around people who smoked and wanted to know the impact of second hand smoke. They were all given leaflets about the effect of carbon monoxide as well as information on the next steps to quitting smoking.

Some of the younger students who weren’t heavy smokers found the Smokey Joe activity interesting, which provided them an opportunity to consider the health and financial impact of smoking.

To accompany the legal highs information, we took various drug resources including the Wheel of Misfortune game. Many of the students were eager to test their knowledge about drugs through this multiple choice game, and it sparked interesting conversations if they were unsure about particular answers.

The drug impairment goggles and hands, which simulate the general effect of using drugs, was also popular. We encouraged students to attempt simple tasks, such as writing their name, whilst wearing the goggles and hands. Even though the game had a fun element, many students commented how shocked they were at the effect it had, and it made them consider the risks if they did take drugs.
