Vickki was invited to deliver an interactive stand to the year 7 students at St Francis of Assisi school, focusing on smoking awareness. She has worked with the school on a number of occasions, and this was the second of two interactive stands she was delivering to this age group, with Alison accompanying her.
The stand emphasised two main points; firstly information about smoking and cigarettes (for example health implications and the chemicals contained in a cigarette), and secondly the dangers of illegal and fake tobacco products.
A number of interactive visual resources were also used to accompany the stand and enhance the learning experience for the students. This included:
- The ‘What’s in a Cigarette’ model
- Smoking Goggles which demonstrate the effects of tobacco related macular degeneration
- Smokers Foot which highlights the danger of gangrene caused by smoking
- Foul Mouth model, illustrating the various ways smoking affects the mouth
- The diseased lungs models, showing tobacco related damage
The students took part in the Smokey Joe quiz; a game which encourages participants to consider the wide implications of smoking from health impacts to cost. They were then asked to share their views on smoking and given an opportunity to ask any questions they had about smoking and addiction.
Vickki provided a number of free resources to the group to further their development and learning on the dangers of smoking after the event.
Our Development Officers, Vickki and Rachel, are available to deliver awareness sessions such as this on a range of topics related to alcohol, drugs, tobacco and gambling. Get in touch today to find out how we can help you!
