Vickki was approached by the St Basils, a charity for young people, to deliver two sessions on alcohol and drug awareness. We have worked with the young people at St Basils on several occasions, so this is a link Vickki has maintained over a number of years.

The sessions were designed to complement their Open College Network Life Skills Qualification, and required specific modules relating to alcohol and drug awareness to be covered. Vickki devised a workbook which ensured each module was covered and could be evidenced, and enabled the young people to gain their qualification.

The first session she delivered focussed on alcohol awareness, and the workbook modules covered a range of topics including:

  • Understanding unit strength
  • Recognising the possible causes of alcohol misuse, along with their physical and psychological effects
  • Becoming aware of the effect alcohol misuse has on other people
  • Recognising the effect of alcohol withdrawal
  • Identifying agencies which can provide help and information regarding alcohol misuse

Along with the workbook Vickki took a variety of interactive resources, including our units challenge activity and alcohol damaged organs, to further enhance the learning experience for the participants.

The second session covered drug awareness and included topics such as:

  • Knowing the difference between types of drugs and their legal status
  • Becoming aware of some of the causes of drug misuse
  • Recognising the effect of drug misuse and withdrawal
  • Becoming aware of the effect drug misuse has on other people
  • Identifying agencies which can provide help and information regarding drug misuse

Vickki utilised a number of discussion cards to encourage conversation between the participants, as well as various video clips to accompany the session. She also took along a variety of interactive resources, including the drug damaged organs and ‘drug doll’, which highlights the dangers to unborn babies of using drug whilst pregnant.

Our Development Officers, Vickki and Rachel, are available to deliver awareness sessions such as this on a range of topics related to alcohol, drugs, tobacco and gambling. Get in touch today to find out how we can help you!
